Four reach double-figures as Royals fall to Wolves at home

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team faced Newberry College for the first time this season falling 102-85 in a fast-paced game to the Wolves in Curry Arena. The Royals' season record now sits at 8-9 while their South Atlantic Conference record is 6-7. Newberry improves to 13-4 on the year and 9-4 in the league.
 
Senior guard Jarrett Stokes led the Royals offense with 23 points after shooting 5-of-9 from the three, while freshman forward Jared Hendryx added 17 points for a career-high. He also totaled eight blocks to lead all on the court in the category. Senior David Mason and sophomore Joby Glymph added 14 and 13 points, respectively. Glymph also dished out seven assists, while Mason recorded six.
 
After trailing the Wolves by a narrow margin in the opening four minutes of action, a three-pointer from Stokes at 15:37 would put Queens ahead for the first time, 12-11. Three lead changes would follow with the Wolves going ahead on a dunk from Xavier Jones at 13:10. A 13-6 run would increase their lead to 11 points, 34-23, with 8:37 to play in the half. Though Queens would cut the lead to six, another push would give the Wolves at 13-point lead at the break.  
 
Queens posted a 50-percent field goal percentage, while shooting 44.4-percent from the three in the first, while the Wolves shot 61.5-percent from the three and 60.6-percent from the floor.
 
By the 18:30 mark in the second half, the Royals had fallen behind by 21 points, 64-43. A 23-8 run in response from Queens over the next 6:30 would bring the home team to within five of Newberry, 71-66. Unfortunately, the Royals' run would be put on hold over the next few minutes as Newberry scored a quick six unanswered points to increase their lead to 11 at 9:48. A free-throw from Hendryx would interrupt the run, but Newberry would come back with a pair of threes and a layup to go up by 18.
 
With time running out, the Royals made one final push closing the gap to 11 once again with 5:39 on the clock, but the Wolves would find a pair of threes once more to increase their margin and hold out for the win.
 
Queens was outrebounded 41-33, but edged the Wolves in points in the paint, 46-44. Newberry's bench outscored Queens 31-10 in their platoon subbing system.
 
Newberry was led by Demarkus Smith who scored 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Dondray Walker added 19 points, while Vincent Hicklin scored 17 points. Holmes and Gerald Evans chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
 
Queens is on the road on Saturday at Tusculum College. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
