Box Score BREVARD, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team improved to 5-1-1 on the season after collecting a 3-2 road win over Brevard College (3-3) this afternoon. The Royals now sit at 1-0-1 in SAC play, while the Tornados are 0-1 in league action after dropping their first conference game of the season.
Freshman defender
Ashley Osiecki was able to strike first in the 23
rd minute scoring her second goal of the season. Following her own short corner, Osiecki was able to curl in a shot past Brevard's keeper after receiving the ball back from senior forward
Brooke Foil.
For the remainder of the half, shots were few and far between with only a combined total of three being taken following Queens' goal. The Tornados, having taken one of the shots, were able to make it count tying the game up heading into the break. After gathering a pass from Elena Crowe, Kaitlin Burns chipped a shot in from 20 yards out that hit the post before going into the net in the 41st.
In the second half the Royals regained the lead when freshman forward
Cassandra Nelson was able to find a wide open
Logan Vitale in the front of the net. Vitale would chip Brevard's keeper for the score in the 54
th.
Queens would be in search of their insurance goal until the 82
nd when sophomore forward
Mary Stringini, in her first appearance of the season due to injury, was able to feed a ball to freshman forward
Kelli Gottry who found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Brevard immediately responded 18 seconds later with a header form Yuki Soga that hit the back of the net making the score, 3-2, with just less than seven minutes left to play in regulation. The Tornados followed their score with another quick shot on goal to knot things up, but Queens' keeper
Jessyca Young made a huge save to keep the Royals ahead. Neither team would get another shot off before the final horn sounded.
The Royals outshot Brevard 13-6 today and won nine corner kicks to the Tornados' zero.
Queens returns to Dickson Field on Wednesday at 5 p.m., to take on Anderson University. The two teams last met in 2009 with Queens taking the battle, 5-1.
