CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queen's University of Charlotte kicked off its 2013 Family Weekend with a thrilling win from the volleyball team in the schools new Levine Center for Wellness and Recreation. The Royals beat South Atlantic Conference foe, the Coker Cobras in a 3-0 match. This victory puts the Royals at 2-2 in the South Atlantic Conference and 2-4 in overall.
In the first set the Royals started off strong receiving the first point. Immediately Anna Gibbs made a clean kill to set the tone early. As the match continued the Royals and Cobras went point for point generating an exhilarating first match. With the match tied at eight Keri Kemp hammered the ball home with a beautiful assist by Taylor Riley to get the Royals a lead.
Later in the set, still neck and neck, Riley tipped it over for a kill bringing the Royals back on top taking a 15-14 lead. The game continued to be neck and neck as the Royals and Cobras competed to stay on top. With the match tied 25-25, Kemp knocked in a spike to help keep the Royals momentum going, and the Royals ended up winning the first match 27-25.
In the second set The Royals started off a little shaky, immediately trailing the match 0-1. However, without delay Gibbs came back from the outside making a clean spike, ultimately setting the tone match. Later in the match the Royals trailed 4-3, but with a great assist from Riley, Dibrell got the spike to tie the match.
Following another Queens' point the Royals led the match 5-4 and never trailed again. The Royals took the match with ease 25-12, and put up an astounding hitting percentage of .433.
In the third set the Royals tried to keep the winning streak going by scoring the first point of the set. From there the Royals once again, never fell behind in the third and final set. With Royals fans loud and proud, Kemp made a final thunderous spike leading the Royals to a crushing 25-6 victory.
Statistically the offense was led by Kemp who tallied 13 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. The steady setting of Riley earned her 35 assists in just three sets. Defensively Jocelyn Kellinger and Brittney Barren were in double digits with digs with 12 and 10 respectively
Queens will take on another South Atlantic Conference team, Mars Hill College on Tuesday, September 24. The Royal's next home game will not be until October 8 vs. Anderson University.
