Royals earn first win of the season

BREVARD, N.C. – On the road first the first time against a South Atlantic Conference foe the Queens volleyball team was able to pick up the first win of the 2013 campaign. The Royals defeated the Tornados by the score of 3-0 and brought their season record to 1-3 on the year.
 
In the first set the Royals found themselves in an early hole with scoreboard showed them behind 8-7, but Queens rallied and managed to tie the game at 15. From there both teams exchanged blows until Queens managed to earn a late lead and took the set by the score of 25-21.
 
In the second set the Royals quickly picked up where they left off and held the lead for the entire set. The Royals continuously demonstrated their strength above the net and piled onto the lead before they finished the set by the score of 25-16
 
In the third set the Queens offense went into overdrive and went on a five point run behind the electric serving of Brittney Barren. The Royals maintained the five point lead through the next few points and countered every Brevard advance with multiple point runs. From there the Royals were able to earn the set victory by the score of 25-18 and pick up their first win of the season.
 
The Royals were able to show why they are a force to be reckoned with after turning in a hitting percentage of .347 for the game. They were led by the senior pairing of Keri Kemp with 13 kills and Anna Gibbs with nine, while Taylor Riley added 33 assists.
 
Defensively the Royals had 43 digs and seven blocks. Jocelyn Kellinger picked up 12 of the digs and Gibbs dominated the net with four blocks. Senior Alexa Sparrell also chipped in with two service aces.
 
The Royals play next when they host the number 16 ranked Wingate Bulldogs on Tuesday in the first game in the history of the Levine Center for Wellness and Recreation.
