Royals drop opening conference match

Box Score HICKORY, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team was on the road tonight as they participated in their inaugural South Atlantic Conference match. Facing off against the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne the Royals struggled to find their offensive flow and dropped the match by 0-3.
 
Queens opened the match slightly behind the Bears, before Lenoir-Rhyne was able to jump to a decisive 10-17 lead in the first set. From there the Royals found themselves scrapping for every point before they dropped the opener by the score of 14-25. Queens struggled offensively and only posted a hitting percentage of -.194.
 
Looking to rebound in the second set the Royals found themselves on the bottom end of the scoreboard with head coach Lettie Wilkes forced to take an early timeout at 3-7. Despite the pause in action the Royals continued to struggle to regroup and dropped the set by the score of 15-25.
 
In the third set Queens was able to start off with an early lead but in a back-and-forth game they found themselves trading blows with the Bears. Lenoir-Rhyne was eventually able to pass the Royals and force another Wilkes timeout at 12-15. From the stoppage Queens did rally and tie the set at 19, but eventually dropped the set and match by the score 22-25.
 
Anna Gibbs led the Royals with 10 kills and Taylor Riley chipped in with 18 assists. Defensively Jocelyn Kellinger led Queens with 12 digs.
 
The Royals travel to Brevard to face off against the Tornadoes on Friday.
