Tennis defeats Barton on senior day

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The men's and women's tennis teams hosted the Bulldogs of Barton College today at Freedom Park for their annual senior day. After taking time to recognize the tremendous careers of six seniors, both the men's and women's teams took care of business on the court with the men winning 8-1, and the women taking theirs 9-0.

Men's side

The men picked up two points in doubles with one of those coming in a tight 9-7 victory by Per-Erik Soler (Nice, France, Lycee du Parc Imperial) and Ole-Jacob Meum (Stabekk, Norway, Wang Athletic Gymnasium).  Leading 2-1 the Royals headed into the singles portion of the match needing three points to win.

Instead they were able to pick up all six with each match going just two sets. Soler, Meum, Andre Bafume (Leme, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Ateneo),  Bryce Boothby (Sudbury, Mass., Pendleton), and Gustavo Munhoz (Santos, Brazil, COC Universitario), all picked up victories and sealed the victory for the Royals.

Women's side

The women took the day by the score of 9-0, and seem to be in control from the start with only one match being forced to a third set. In doubles the Royals started off with a 8-0 win by Christina Rustscheff (Toronto, Canada, Bayview Glen) and Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson),  and followed that up with wins by Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) and Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) by the score 8-1, and Farina Rafiq (Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada, Cobequid Educational Centre) and Paige Earnest (Charlotte, N.C., Charlotte Catholic) by the score of 8-4.

In the singles Rustscheff, Roberts, Williams, Poole, and Earnest all toppled their opponents in two sets. In the lone match going three sets it was Rafiq who showed her determination, and took a gritty match by the score of 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.

The men improved their record to 9-4 and the women to 12-3, with both teams travelling to Pfeiffer tomorrow to close out regular season play.
