Royals edge Mount Olive at home

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte knocked down 7-of-10 free-throws in the final 2:24 to come back from five down and defeat Mount Olive College 55-53 this evening at the Grady Cole Center. Queens (10-9) improves to 8-7 in the league, while the Trojans (12-7) fall to 8-7.

The Royals used a collective effort to defeat the Trojans with scoring coming from 10 different players. Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) led the way with nine points, while Shanel Sweet (Land O'Lakes, Fla., Land O' Lakes) and Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) added eight apiece. Lacey Singletary (Burlington, N.C., Oak Ridge) led the Royals under the glass with six rebounds, while Pettaway pulled down five.

Queens held the lead much of the second half until the Trojans went ahead 49-47 on a layup from Shylia Buie at 5:13. Mount Olive would build their lead to five on a basket at 2:33, but that would be the final basket scored by the Trojans on the night as the Royals turned up their defensive pressure, forcing the Trojans to turn the ball over. This, in turn, led to the Royals attacking the basket and getting to the foul line where they won the game.

Mount Olive led the entire first half up until Sweet knocked down a three-pointer at 4:18 giving the Royals a 21-18 advantage. The Royals went up by as much as five before the break.

Mount Olive was led by Alexandra Silva and Tamara Nesmith who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Alyssa Luebs collected 10 rebounds.

Queens will host Converse College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
