Pettaway scores 29 in loss to Claflin

Box Score ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women's basketball team fell on the road this afternoon to Claflin University in a nonconference game before the holiday break. The Royals lost 63-49, dropping their overall record to 3-6. The Lady Panthers improve to 4-6 after snapping a five-game losing streak.

Senior forward Shonice Pettaway led the way for all on the court today with 29 points on 10-20 shooting. She was also 6-10 from behind the three-point line and 3-4 at the foul line. Additionally, Pettaway pulled down nine rebounds.

The Royals found themselves in a hole early in the game when the Lady Panthers opened the game with a 15-2 run. Queens would close the gap to eight on a few occasions, but that's as close as the Royals would get to Claflin in the half. The Royals trailed Claflin 31-21 at the break following a jumper from Erin Brundage with five seconds to play.

A 12-2 run in the second half helped the Royals cut Claflin's lead down to six, 41-35, with 10:49 to play. Unfortunately a drought would follow for Queens allowing the Lady Panthers to extend their lead back out to 16, 54-38. The two teams would close the game trading short spurts which worked in Claflin's favor due to the lead they had built.

The Royals were outscored 40-10 in the paint and committed 24 turnovers that the Lady Panthers converted into 28 points.

Jaquanna Davis led Claflin with 15 points, while Karahn Scott scored 13 points. Shakiema Ravenell and Uniqua Mitchell each chipped in with 11 points.

The Royals will be on their holiday break until January 4 when they welcome Mars Hill College. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
