Big men lead Royals to victory over Mighty Sabers

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team picked up a 96-68 win over Barber-Scotia College (0-16) this evening to head into the holiday break on a high note. The Royals improve to 4-5 on the season after picking up the nonconference win in Curry Arena.

Queens' big men led the way on the offensive end with Josh Clyburn scoring 20 points, while Brent Evans added 19 points and Nkosi Ali scored 16 points. Ali also grabbed nine rebounds to lead Queens, while Evans and Clyburn pulled down eight and six rebounds, respectively. Also reaching double-digits tonight in scoring was Jarrett Stokes who chipped in with 11 points. The senior guard also dished out five assists along with junior guard Trey Ervin.

After a first half where the Sabers caught fire from behind the three-point line shooting 64 percent, the Royals found themselves with a narrow 41-37 lead at the break.

Queens would take control in the second half going on a 14-2 run to hold a 55-39 lead at the first media timeout.  High pressure defense by the Royals flustered the Sabers' offense causing them to commit multiple turnovers. The Royals would finish the game with 26 points off of Barber-Scotia's ball handling mishaps.

A 9-0 run later in the half capped by a Stokes three-pointer would help Queens extend their lead to 26 with 7:36 to play, and they would lead by as much as 31 points before the final horn sounded.

The Royals outscored the Sabers 60-14 in the paint, and registered 21 second chance points to Barber-Scotia's nine. Queens also won the battle under the glass, 41-25.

The Sabers were led by Carlos Benton who scored 18 points. Additionally, Joel Barnes added 14 points, and Ricky Bowser chipped in with 10 points.

The Royals will be on their holiday break until January 4 when they welcome Mars Hill College. Tip-off is at 4 p.m.
