Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team traveled to Georgia Regents University to take on the Jaguars in a regional matchup today. The Royals were able to come away with a crucial win in a large part due to a strong defensive effort that consisted of 18 total blocks and five Royals with double digit digs.
The first set was a relatively tight affair that had both teams scrapping for points. The Royals were able to pull away eventually with the score tied at 18, and pick up the crucial first frame by the score of 25-22. Despite only hitting .152, Queens was able to stifle their opponents and force errors to pick up the early set win.
Queens nearly doubled its hitting percentage with a strong .296 in the second set, and combined with forcing the Jaguars to a -.065 percentage they took the match with ease by the score 25-12. The highlight of the set came early for Queens when the team went on a 12 point run behind the strong serving of
Keri Kemp.
The Jaguars rebounded in the third set and put up quite the fight against their opponents. Queens managed to tie the match at eight, but the home team managed to build and hold the lead to take the match by the score of 21-25.
Following the third set loss the Royals and Jaguars began perhaps the most tightly contested set of the night. Down by five points early the Royals mounted a steady counterattack that allowed them to tie the match at 23 late. From there they exchanged points until senior
Brittney Barren crushed a serve to end the set on an ace by the score of 26-24.
Kemp led the Royals with 16 kills on a .325 hitting percentage, and
Anna Gibbs joined her in double digits with 10. Pacing the offense from her setter position was
Taylor Riley who had 38 assists, as well as, 11 digs. Joining her with double digit digs were Kemp with 17,
Jocelyn Kellinger with 14,
Alexa Sparrell with 11, and
Erin Mooney with 10. Barren led the Royals with 8 total blocks.
The Royals are currently 11-10 overall, and 9-8 in conference play. They host Lincoln Memorial on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
