CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team kicked off their season with an 80-55 exhibition game win over Averett University this evening in Curry Arena. It was the first men's basketball game to take place in the Levine Center for Wellness and Recreation and it took place on Dale Layer Court in front of a crowd of 1,200 people.
Newcomer
Jarrett Stokes would be the first to score a basket in Curry Arena with a layup 38 seconds into the game. He would go on to help the Royals build a five point lead early before the Cougars put together an 8-0 run for a three-point lead, 12-15, with 11:55 to play in the first.
Sophomore guard
Ben Richter would tie the game at 15-15 with a three-pointer, sparking a 21-4 run in the final 11:30 of the half.
At the break, Queens led 36-19 after shooting 44.8 percent from the floor. The Cougars finished the half shooting just 22.6 percent.
The Royals maintained their lead throughout the second half shooting 50 percent from behind the three-point arc.
A rebound put-back dunk from senior forward
Brent Evans sent the crowd into a roar while also putting the Royals ahead 22 points, 51-29, with 12:22 to play.
Later, Richter would give Queens its largest lead of the game, 63-35, with 8:42 to play with a fast-break dunk in the open court. He would go on to lead all players in scoring with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He also dished out five assists to lead everyone on the court.
Evans added 13 points, while sophomore guard
Joby Glymph scored 12 points.
David Mason and
Logan Evans chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Brent and Logan each pulled down seven rebounds along with Mason and
Jared Hendryx who also grabbed seven boards each.
Head Coach
Bart Lundy, in his debut back at Queens stated, "Our goal is to get one percent better every day and we accomplished that. Tomorrow we will build on this."
The Royals begin their regular season with their first official game on November 12 at home against Claflin University at 7:30 p.m.
