Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team closed out the 2013 regular season on the road at regionally ranked Newberry College this morning. Down late in the fifth set the Royals rattled off seven straight points to win the set and the match in sensational fashion.
In the first set the Royals jumped to an early 6-2 lead following back-to-back kills by senior
Keri Kemp. Newberry did manage to narrow the lead to one, but Queens jumped ahead 15-11 following a pair of attack errors by the home team. The Royals continued to build on the lead behind a .346 hitting percentage, and took the first set by the score of 25-18
In the second set the Wolves were able to earn a lead, and following a five point run were ahead 5-12. From there the home team continued to tack on points and took the set 15-25.
From the start the third set was a contested affair neither team willing to give in. With the score tied 10-10 the Royals were able to begin to create a margin that Newberry would never overcome. The Royals hit .371 in the set, and won 25-20 to give them a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set the Wolves did take an early lead, but following two service aces by
Taylor Riley the Royals evened the score at 7-7. The Wolves countered with two aces of their own, and had took the lead 11-9 forcing Queens head coach
Lettie Wilkes to take a timeout. The stoppage did little to stop the home side, and Newberry was able to force a fifth set with a 19-25 win.
Newberry jumped to a quick 0-3 lead in the fifth and final set, forcing Wilkes to call another Queens timeout in hopes to stymie the home team. Battling from behind the Royals fought back to narrow the lead to just one, but Newberry was able to once again build a five point lead late in the set. Queens kept battling, and was able to roll off five straight points to even the score at 14-14.
With the match hanging in the balance sophomore
Elizabeth Bialkowski slammed home a Riley pass to take the lead the lead at 15-14. In the very next point both Bialkowski and
Anna Gibbs rose above the net stonewalled an attacking Newberry player to earn the 16-14 win on a monstrous block.
Brittney Barren led the Royals with a .516 hitting percentage and 20 kills. Joining her with double digit kills was Kemp with 18.
Taylor Riley guided the attack from her setter position, and chipped in with 49 assists.
Defensively Bialkowski tallied six blocks, and Kemp and
Alexa Sparrell finished with double digit digs.
The Royals end the regular season 16-10 overall, and 14-8 in conference play.
