Brent Evans recorded his first double-double of the season this evening with 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Royals were edged, 81-78, at home by the Mount Olive Trojans. The nonconference loss brings Queens University of Charlotte's record to 1-1 on the season, while the Trojans improve to 3-1.
After trailing by as much as 17 points in the second half, 65-48, the Royals rallied back to cut Mount Olive's lead to four, 70-74, with 4:21 to play. Queens would put together a 12-0 run to get back in the game that began with a pair of free-throws from senior forward
Josh Clyburn. He would be the one to cap the run at the foul line as well following seven straight points from senior guard
Jarrett Stokes.
The Trojans finally found an answer to the Royals' spurt with a John Wieland three-pointer stretching their lead out to seven, 77-70. However, the Royals weren't ready to back down cutting Mount Olive's lead down to two, 77-75, after a pair of layups from sophomore guard
Joby Glymph, separated by a free-throw from Evans.
A foul on the opposite end of the floor would send Jordan McCain of Mount Olive to the free-throw line where he put his team back ahead by four. Following a turnover by the Royals, McCain would find himself at the charity stripe again where he knocked down a pair once more to give the Trojans an 81-75 lead with 1:02 to play.
With two seconds left on the clock, Evans would connect on a rebound put-back to cut Mount Olive's lead to three, 81-78. The Trojans then turned the ball over on the inbound giving Queens a chance to tie with 1.7 on the clock. However the Royals attempt to tie the game came up short as Evans' three-pointer rimmed out of the hoop and the horn sounded.
At the half, Queens trailed Mount Olive 40-34 after shooting 46.4 percent from the floor compared to the Trojans' 51.4 field goal percentage. Evans and Stokes each had 12 points at the break.
Stokes would go on to finish with 21 points behind Evans' 25. Glymph added 13 points, while Clyburn scored 11 points.
The Trojans were led by McCain who scored 18 points. Dontrell Brite added 16 points and Wieland scored 14. Kendall Hargrove chipped in with 12 points.
The Royals edged Mount Olive on the boards, 41-39, while both teams turned the ball over 15 times each.
The Royals will begin conference play on Wednesday at Lenoir-Rhyne University in a doubleheader with the women. The game is slated to begin at 8 p.m.
