Royals take down Claflin for first win of the season

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With 1:52 to play and the game tied, 66-66, the Royals would shoot 4-6 from the foul line to secure their first regular season win in history on Dale Layer Court. Queens University of Charlotte's men's basketball team defeated Claflin University by a score of 72-71 to begin their 2013-14 campaign at 1-0. The Panthers drop to 1-2 on the early season with the loss.

The Panthers had the momentum early in the game building a seven point lead, 11-4, 16:17 into the game. They would keep the lead up until the Royals put together an 8-0 run to take control following the third media timeout of the half. Queens stretched their lead out to as much as 13, 35-22, before the Panthers cut it back down to six, 35-29, at the half.

Sophomore guard Joby Glymph led the Royals with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting at the break.

A three-pointer from Jarrett Stokes with 12:42 to play in the second put Queens ahead 10 points before the Panthers began to chip away at the Royals' lead. A steal by Claflin's Quinton Nance and a made layup by Jarrod Denard would allow the Panthers to regain control of the game with 7:04 to play.

Seven lead changes and three ties would follow before a foul by Claflin's Marcellus Dunn sent Queens' Josh Clyburn to the line. The senior would knock down one-of-two from the charity stripe to give the Royals a one-point advantage with 51 seconds to play.

Freshman forward Jared Hendryx, who had terrorized the Panthers in the paint collecting four blocks on the night, would be the one to come up big on the defensive end once again collecting a huge steal. A foul by the Panthers immediately following the change in possession sent Glymph to the line where he knocked down both free-throws to give Queens a three-point lead, 69-66.

An emphatic dunk from Clyburn with five seconds to go would put an exclamation mark on the win.

The Royals shot 56.5 percent from the floor this evening, while the Panthers shot 40 percent. Queens out-rebounded Claflin, 46-31 and outscored them 46-30 in the paint.

Glymph finished the game with 23 points, while Clyburn and Stokes each chipped in with 13 points apiece. Brent Evans led all on the court with 11 rebounds.
