CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's tennis teams hosted Bluefield College today in a match that not only showed the strength, but also the depth of the teams. Both squads won handily with the men going 8-1 and the women earnin a clean sweep of 9-0, taking the men's record to 3-0 and the women to 2-0.
"I am very proud of the steps many of our players have made during this Fall season," said head coach
Brett Karpman. "Both squads are strong and I am excited to see our youth develop. We are very capable of reaching a higher level."
Men's match
The Royals' men's team won by the score of 8-1 with the only point they gave up coming in a match forced to extra points. Leading the way in doubles was
Jules Athalis and
Andre Bafume who took their match 8-6,
Ignacio Casali and
Zachary Williams who won 8-1, and the pairing of
Nizar Kuseybi and
Ole-Jacob Meum who dominated with an 9-0 victory.
In singles the Royals picked up where they left off, and added five more points with none of those matches going more than two sets. Adding victories for the Royals were Athalis, Bafume, Williams,
Will Roberson, and
Sean Harris.
Women's match
True to the theme of the day the women's team not only showed why they are a regional powerhouse, but also how deep they are. Led by the senior stalwart
Christina Rustscheff the Royals jumped out early with her doubles pairing with
Melissa Laing and the paring of
Paige Ernest and
Farina Rafiq both picking up wins.
In singles the Royals nearly rolled out an entire new lineup of stars with several freshman picking up wins. Crucial parts to the clean sweep were wins by Rustscheff,
Jaclyn Rock, Rafiq, Ernest, and
Oliva Laws.
The Royals play next when the women travel to Emmanuel College this Saturday.
