13 aces power Royals to three set victory

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team returned home to Curry Arena tonight after a four game conference road trip. Facing the Indians of Catawba College the Royals were able to find their groove early and pick up a 3-0 victory.
 
Key to the victory were the 13 aces the Royals produced, including three apiece from Brittney Barren, Alexa Sparrell, and Keri Kemp. This domination was on display throughout the match, but first showed itself on a run in the first set that gave the Royals a 13-7 lead behind Barren's serving.
 
From there the team continued to build on the lead with Sparrell catching fire and picking up three aces at the end of the set. With this advantage the Royals coasted to a 25-15 victory.
 
In set two both teams exchanged points in the early stages, but soon the Royals began to pull away. Building off Catawba errors the Royals started to pile on points, with senior Anna Gibbs crushing the final ball to Queens a 25-17 win.
 
True to the theme of the match the Royals were able to build an early lead in the third set via their fantastic serves. Feeding off the home crowd the Royals started dominating above the net, and hit a robust .333 for the set. With all facets of their game producing the Royals were able to take the set and the match by the score of 25-11.
 
Key players offensively were Kemp with 13 kills and Taylor Riley with an efficient 30 assists. Defensively Erin Mooney paced Queens with nine digs, and Barren added three total blocks.
 
As a part of tonight's game both teams recognized those who have been affected by breast cancer, and raised money for the Side-Out Foundation.
 
The Royals are currently 4-7 overall and 4-5 in conference play. Queens hosts Anderson Friday at 7:00 p.m.
