Freshman Meredith Jones has career night against Railsplitters

Box Score Horrogate, Tenn. – On the tail end of a long streak of road games the Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team found itself in Horrogate, Tennessee facing off against the Railspitters of Lincoln Memorial tonight. In what looks to be the start to a promising career freshman Meredith Jones paced the Royals with 22 kills with a .372 hitting percentage.

In an evenly fought match the Royals eventually found themselves exchanging points with a strong conference opponent, but unfortunately were on the losing end of the scoreboard at the end of the affair.

"This was a well fought match," said head coach Lettie Wilkes. "I am very proud of our play, and it was great to see Meredith tear it up on the court."

In set one the Royals were able to negate the home court advantage of their opponents and jumped to a quick lead behind a strong offensive attack. Up by 10 at multiple points in the match, the Royals soon found themselves holding off a surging Railsplitters squad. Queens was eventually successful and picked up a win in the first set by the score of 25-19 behind a strong hitting percentage of .326.

In the second set the Royals discovered themselves in a hole early and spent much of the frame fighting to even the score. Despite their strong efforts, they were eventually unsuccessful and eventually dropped the set by the score 19-25.

In the third set the Royals jumped to 10-3 lead, but the Railsplitters put together a strong rally and were able to take back the lead at 11-12. In an exciting set both teams exchanged points through the remainder with neither squad wanting to give in. With the set forced to extra points it was Lincoln Memorial that came out on top with a 29-31 victory.

Much like the third, the fourth frame was a tug-of-war between two strong opponents with neither willing to give in. With the set tied at 22 the Railsplitters were able to push forward on their home court for a 22-25 win to take the match.

Jones finished the night with 22 kills and Anna Gibbs and Keri Kemp added 15 and 14 respectively. Taylor Riley controlled the game from her setter position and added 52 assists to the offensive effort.  Jocelyn Kellinger and Kemp led the Royals with 21 digs apiece.

The Royals face Carson-Newman tomorrow at 12 p.m. and are currently 2-7 overall and 2-5 in conference play following today's match.
