Royals stay strong in five set victory

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team hosted South Atlantic Conference opponent Lenior-Rhyne University tonight in Curry Arena. The Royals rallied for a five set victory over the Bears which brought the Royals 6-6 in the South Atlantic Conference and 6-8 overall. 

Up early the Royals looked strong in the first set, working strategically to make great plays. To keep the Royals on top seniors Taylor Riley and Brittney Barren assisted in a stunning block to put the Royals up 22-14. The Royals finished off the set with style with a beautiful assist by Riley, allowing Barren to make a clean cut, giving Queens a win by the score of 25-15.

In the second the Royals kept the momentum going, taking an early lead over Lenior-Rhyne 5-1. But, Lenior-Rhyne was able to rally back tying the set 10-10 and later took a 15-19 lead over the Royals. Queens was eventually able to tie the set, but the Royals were never able to come back causing the team to ultimately lose the second set 19-25.

In the third the Bears took an early lead, but Queens was able to rally back regaining the lead at 6-5. Throughout the set Lenior-Rhyne was able to push back, tying and later taking a 15-12 lead over the Royals. In the end the Royals fell short and lost the third set 19-25.

In the fourth and most thrilling set, the Royals started off slow trailing 0-7. Kemp brought in the first kill putting the Royals on the board. This kill helped spark energy for the Royals. Later the Royals rallied back and tie up the set 13-13. Soon after Gibbs added a beautiful kill giving the Royals a 15-14 lead that they would never look back from.  In one of the best comebacks of the season the Royals won the set 25-20.

In the fifth and final set the Royals started out on fire and took an early lead. The Royals continued to keep this steady lead over Lenior-Rhyne's throughout the fifth set. With a 9-6 lead Riley was able to tip it over for the kill keeping the Royals on top 10-6, with Queens ultimately winning the set 15-12.

Kemp, Gibbs, and Meredith Jones paced the Royals with double digit kills, while Riley added 52 assists. Defensively Jocelyn Kellinger led the Royals with 23 digs, and Erin Mooney, Alexa Sparrell, Riley and Kemp ended the match in double digits as well.

The Royals will take on the South Atlantic Conference team, Brevard on Friday October 18 at 7:00 p.m.
