CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's tennis teams crossed town today to open their season against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith. Both teams flexed their muscles early and picked up wins with the men taking their match 9-0 and the women by the score of 7-2.
Men's team
The Royals swept the Golden Bulls 9-0 with no matches going more than the two sets. Picking up 8-0 wins in doubles were the pairings of
Zachary Williams and
Ole-Jacob Meum, and
Will Roberson and
Andre Bafume. The number one pair of
Ignacio Casali and
Jules Athalis also picked up a victory by the score of 8-4.
In singles the men picked up their dominant performance with match going longer than the two sets needed. Adding wins for the Royals were Athalis,
Lucas Okita, Williams, Roberson,
Sean Harris and
Nizar Kuseybi.
Women's team
Opening the match for the women was an 8-0 victory by the number one pairing of
Christina Rustscheff and
Melissa Laing. Adding to their performance were wins by the pairings of
Claire Hamilton and
Jaclyn Rock (8-1), and Paige Earnest and
Hannah Pressley (8-2).
The women also picked up four points in singles with Rock, Hamilton,
Jessee Clauson, and
Farina Rafiq all winning in two sets.
Both men's and women's teams are 1-0 on the year and the men play next when they host Winston-Salem State this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Freedom Park.
