Royals return the favor; defeat Eagles 70-66

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team defeated Carson-Newman College 70-66 this afternoon at the Grady Cole Center, making the season match-up between the two teams 1-1. Queens improves to 5-5 on the year with the non-conference victory, while the Eagles drop to 8-2 on the season.
 
Queens' Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) led the Royals with a career-high 29 points on 9-of-18 shooting. He also grabbed 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) and David Mason (Decatur, Ga., Chamblee) added 12 points apiece, while Tre McLean (Charleston, S.C., West Ashley) led all on the court with 11 boards.
 
Carson-Newman jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the opening minutes before Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) got the Royals going, knocking down a three-pointer at 17:26. Queens would go on a 15-6 run, tying the game at 15-15 with 12:35 to play. Keeping the momentum on their side, the Royals took the lead for the first time at 11:45, and kept it heading into the break despite the Eagles' efforts to regain control.
 
A layup at the beginning of the second by Carson-Newman's Jared Johnson quickly tied the game at 33-33. The Eagles then took a three-point lead on a bucket from deep scored by Cody Henegar. They would go up by as much as eight before the Royals fought their way back into the game with an 8-0 run tying things back up at 49-49.

Three lead changes would follow with the final coming at 4:46 when Blackburn knocked down his second three, giving the home team a 61-59 advantage. Carson-Newman knotted the game twice more in the final minutes, but Queens' Stabler stepped up huge scoring seven points in the final three minutes of action.
 
The Royals shot 43.3-percent in today's win, and outrebounded the Eagles 41-35.
 
Carson-Newman was led by Ishmael Sanders who scored 18 points. Henegar added 13 and Johnson scored 11, while leading scorer Antoine Davis was held to just 12 points.
 
The Royals will travel to Mount Olive on January 9 for their next game. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
