Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) recorded her second double-double of the year with 20 points and 10 rebounds to help lead Queens University of Charlotte (5-3) past No. 21 Limestone College (6-2) this evening in women's basketball action at the Grady Cole Center. The Royals dominated the Saints, winning 78-58 to improve their record to 3-1 in the league. Limestone falls to 3-1 after being handed their first conference loss of the season.
Joining Pettaway in double-digit scoring was freshman guard
Nikia Squire (Columbia, S.C., Ridge View) with 21 points, and junior forward
Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) with 14. Myatt also pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman
Tia Hudgins (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) recorded eight points and nine rebounds.
The Royals' stifling defense forced the Saints into 14 first-half turnovers, which Queens was able to convert into 17 points en route to building their 44-25 halftime lead. Queens also shot 47.4-percent from the floor compared the Limestone's 29-percent. In the final five minutes of the half, an 11-2 run by Queens would create some space between them and the nationally ranked Saints.
A layup by Limestone's Danielle Dixon cut Queens' lead to 16, 47-31, at 16:57 in the second, but the Royals would answer with a 15-7 run to increase their lead to 24 points. Queens would see its largest lead at 4:59, when a jumper from Pettaway gave them a 75-48 advantage.
The Royals finished the game with a 46.3 shot percentage, while the Saints shot just 32.8-percent from the floor. Queens also outrebounded the Saints 49-45. The Royals, ranked third in the nation in steals per game, finished with 13.
Limestone's offense was led by Tia Williams who scored 17 points. Dixon added 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Stephanie Hayes scored 14 points.
Queens returns to action on Saturday, January 5 when they travel to face Converse College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
