Shonice Pettaway (Walstonburg, N.C., Greene Central) recorded her fifth double-double with 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Royals past North Greenville University this afternoon in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action. The Royals defeated the Crusaders 63-56, improving their record to 7-5 in the league. The Crusaders drop to 2-9 in the conference.
Freshman
Tia Hudgins (Rocky Mount, N.C., Rocky Mount) scored 10 points and collected 10 rebounds, while junior
Sarah Myatt (Show Camp, N.C., Southern Alamance) scored nine points and totaled five boards.
In a first half that saw nine ties, the Royals were able to head into the break with a 30-24 lead following a 7-0 run in the final minutes.
The Royals got going in the second half building their lead out to 15, 39-24, three minutes into action. The Crusaders would cut the lead to five, 43-38, at 12:54, but Queens answered with eight straight points to stretch their margin back out to 13, 51-38. North Greenville made another push in the closing minutes to get within three of Queens, but the Royals had a response once more to come out on top.
Queens completed the game with a 41.8 shooting percentage, while North Greenville shot 33.9 percent. Queens outrebounded the Crusaders 50-32.
Timisty Nelson led the Crusaders with 18 points and six rebounds.
Queens returns to action on Thursday, January 31 at the Grady Cole Center when they tip-off against Pfeiffer University at 5:30 p.m.
