Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team (8-8) fell to No. 15 Barton College (13-2) this evening by a score of 76-68 at the Grady Cole Center. The Royals' conference record drops to 5-5, while Barton improves to 8-1 in Conference Carolinas.
The last time the two teams met was in last season's conference tournament semifinals where the Bulldogs came back from 19 down to snatch the Royals' championship berth. Tonight's rematch did not disappoint as the Royals quickly jumped out to a 13-4 lead, holding the Bulldogs to just 18 percent shooting five minutes into the first.
Queens continued their run through the first media gaining their largest lead of the game, 23-12, on a jumper from
Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) at 10:02. A 15-6 run by the Bulldogs, consisting of four threes, would put the visitors ahead of Queens for the first time at 4:33. Both teams traded baskets in the closing minutes as the half ended in a 39-39 tie.
The Royals shot an impressive 69.6 percent from the floor in the first half.
The second half would feature both teams battling hard with Barton staying ahead by a slim margin following three freebies scored early. With less than four to play, the Royals made a push with back-to-back fast-break baskets to cut Barton's lead to two, 67-65, with 2:48 on the clock. However, Barton would respond with five straight points to extend their lead back out to seven. They eventually reached their largest lead, eight, at the foul line with 14 seconds to play.
Queens finished the game with a 56.5 shooting percentage, while Barton shot 47.4 percent from the floor. The Bulldogs connected on 11-of-18 shots from behind the three-point line.
Stabler led the Royals in scoring for the third game in a row with 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting. He also grabbed 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
Joby Glymph (Lexington, S.C., Lexington) scored 15 points, while
Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) added 12 points and five assists.
Gerald Boston led Barton with 19 points. Jon Hart scored 17 points and totaled 10 rebounds, while Flemmings chipped in with 15 points.
Queens is on the road at North Greenville University on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
