Royals take out Erskine in Due West

The Royals won 65-61.

Box Score DUE WEST, S.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team stayed composed  knocking down 7-8 free-throws during the final minute of play in the midst of late comeback efforts from the Flying Fleet. The Royals left Belk Arena this afternoon with a 65-61 win improving to 9-1 in the league and 14-6 overall, while Erskine College drops to 2-8 in Conference Carolinas and 6-15 on the season.

Four Queens players reached double-digits in scoring this afternoon with Daniel Bailey's (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) 14 points leading the way. Bailey also snatched down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside) was next in line with 13 points after going a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line. Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) and Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Both teams traded baskets early before back-to-back buckets from Bailey sparked a 7-2 spurt giving Queens a 17-10 lead with 13-minutes to play in the first. Erskine would stay in the game getting to within one of Queens on two occasions after jumpers scored by Casey Sorrell and Filip Pejovic. However, two consecutive three-pointers from David Cheek (Graham, N.C., Graham) quickly returned the momentum to Queens enabling them to take a nine point lead with 3:15 on the clock. Eads would give the Royals their largest lead of the half, 11, at the foul line two-minutes before Queens headed into the locker room with a 34-28 lead.

A three-pointer from Sorrell cut Queens' lead to three at the start of the second, but a jumper from Evans helped the Royals keep a little distance between themselves and the Fleet. With 15:47 to play, Sorrell hit a free-throw tying the game up at 38-38 before a 9-0 run put the Royals back up 47-38. In the final two-minutes of regulation the Fleet cut Queens' lead to four, but could not get any closer as the Royals were automatic from the free-throw line insuring the win.

Sorrell and Mika Gabbard led the Fleet with 13 points apiece.

Queens will be back at the Grady Cole Center on Wednesday night to take on St. Andrews University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
