Royals put on dunk fest for Homecoming

The Royals won 78-57.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team showcased their high-flying talents this afternoon delivering a number of crowd pleasing dunks en route to defeating Lees-McRae College 78-57 for Homecoming 2012. The win advances Queens' league record to 13-1, while solidifying first place in the East for the Royals. The Bobcats drop to 7-8 in Conference Carolinas.

A pair of Queens' reserves led their offense for the day. David Mason (Decatur, Ga., Chamblee) scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting alongside going 4-4 from the foul line. Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) also led the Royals in scoring for the second game in a row notching 17 points after connecting on 4-of-7 three-pointers. Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) added 16 points and game-highs of seven rebounds and four steals. Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) and Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside) each dished out a game-high three assists.

Queens (18-7) posted a field goal percentage of 50 percent on the night, including a 57.7 percent clip in the second half, as the Royals knocked down 10 more shots than Lees-McRae (8-16). The Bobcats shot an even 50 percent from the floor as well, including a 55 percent mark in the first half, while edging the Royals by a 33-31 margin on the glass.

The Royals jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the first half after Sam Johnson scored the first two points of the game on a reverse dunk before the Bobcats responded evening the tally at 10-10 with eight consecutive markers by Brown. After, Queens regained the lead with an 11-4 run that was capped by a Nichols dunk. Blackburn scored nine points during the run with three consecutive baskets from behind the three-point line. Lees-McRae would answer with a 10-6 spurt to cut the margin to 27-24, but the Royals closed out the half with a 12-4 surge to take a 39-28 advantage into the intermission.

Stabler helped the Royals carry the momentum into the second half with a fastbreak , two-handed slam three-minutes into play that brought the crowd to their feet. Queens pushed their margin to 55-31 with a 16-7 run that was capped by a Mason jumper with 13:55 to play. About three minutes later, Joshua Twitty (Rutherfordton, N.C., Polk County) would collect a still himself delivering a one-handed bash on his opponent sending the audience into an uproar. Queens held on from there, closing out the 78-57 victory with strong play on both ends of the floor down the stretch.

Lees-McRae's DJ Brown led all scorers with 18 points in the contest, going 4-for-4 from downtown and 6-for-6 at the free throw line, as Daniel Sepokas added 16 points. Jeremiah Henry chipped in eight points.

The Royals will head to Hartsville, S.C., to take on Coker College Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
