JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Queens University of Charlotte's men's basketball team traveled to Carson-Newman College, falling 90-55 in the two teams' first meeting of this century. The Royals now sit at 4-4 on the season heading into the holiday break, while the Eagles improve to 8-1 on the year.
Senior forward
Sam Johnson (Leicester, N.C., Asheville Christian) led the Royals tonight with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Senior guards
Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) and
Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) added 11 and 10 points respectively. Nichols also collected five rebounds and six assists.
Queens'
Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) scored the first bucket of the game to give the Royals their only lead of the contest before a three-pointer from the Eagles put them ahead, where they would stay. A three-pointer from Queens'
Griffin Shaw (Charlotte, N.C., Myers Park) cut the Eagles' lead to five, 28-23, with 6:01 on the clock, but Carson-Newman had an answer, going on an 18-5 run to take a 46-28 halftime advantage.
The Eagles continued their hot shooting in the second half, stretching their lead out to as much as 35 before the final horn sounded.
Queens shot 34.5 percent from the floor in this evening's game compared to Carson-Newman's 59.6 shooting percentage. The Eagles shot 57.1 percent from behind the three-point line. The Royals were also outrebounded 39-24 in the contest.
Antoine Davis of the Eagles led all on the court with 36 points after shooting 8-of-10 from deep. Ishmael Sanders added 25 points, connecting on 7-of-14 attempts from the three. Cody Henegar pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with his eight points and six assists.
The Royals will break for the holidays before returning to the court on January 3 to host Limestone College at 7:30 p.m.
