Men’s basketball picks up first conference loss

Box Score BRISTOL, Tenn. – Queens University of Charlotte traveled to face an undefeated King College in men's basketball action falling 78-74 to pick up their first conference loss of the season. The Royals are now 4-2 on the year and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas play, while the Tornado improve to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in the league.

After falling behind by as much as 14 points, 51-37, around the 13 minute mark of the second half, Queens began to fight their way back into the game. The Royals were able to close the gap to five on a few occasions, but the Tornado once again opened things up with spurts on the offensive end. Queens would make their final push in the final three minutes of play, tying the game up, 73-73, on a jumper from Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) with 1:33 on the clock.

The Royals would take a blow on the very next play as Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) picked up his fifth foul sending the Tornado's Drew Standifer to the line. Standifer only knock down one of the pair to give the Tornado a one-point lead, but a missed shot on the offensive end for Queens would force them to foul the Tornado with 29 seconds left to play. King's Michael Fortune scored the first and missed the second putting King up two, 75-73.

On the Royals' next possession, Stabler was fouled while shooting, giving him the chance to tie things back up. Stabler would score only one of the two forcing the Royals to stop the clock by sending the Tornado to the free-throw line where they were able to seal the win.

In the first half, King shot 45-percent from the floor to Queens' 30.3-percent to take a narrow 29-25 lead at the break. Queens finished the game with a 42.4 field goal percentage.

Stabler led the Royals in scoring with 20 points, while Evans recorded 16 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) and Trey Ervin (Kernersville, N.C., Mount Tabor) chipped in with eight and seven points, respectively.

The Tornado were led by Logan Lyle who scored 20 points. Standifer added 11 points, while Jason Seymore and Eddie Piccinini scored 10 apiece.

Queens will stay in Tennessee for the remainder of the weekend to face Tusculum College on Monday at 7:00 p.m.
