Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team opened its season this evening against Wingate University in the South Atlantic Conference/ Conference Carolinas Tip-Off Classic in Cuddy Arena falling 65-52 to the Bulldogs.
The Royals were led offensively by senior forward
Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) who scored a game-high 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Junior forward
Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) was Queens' next leading scorer adding eight. Evans was successful under the boards as well leading all with 12 rebounds.
Joby Glymph (Lexington, S.C., Lexington) and
Sam Johnson (Leicester, N.C., Asheville Christian) chipped in seven apiece, while
Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) scored six.
Wingate's offense was paced by Ethan Kincaid and Ryan Daye who each notched 11 points. Four other Bulldogs, including Odell Turner who grabbed eight boards, scored nine points each.
The Bulldogs opened the game with a 10-2 run before Stabler drained a three to bring Queens within five, 10-5. A jumper from Nichols brought the Royals to within four of the Bulldogs with 11:34 on the clock, but a cold offense from the Royals would follow allowing Wingate to stretch its lead out to as much as 11 on few occasions. At the half, Queens trailed 31-20.
In the second half, the Bulldogs pulled out to a 14-point lead before the Royals came back closing the gap to four on a three-pointer from Stabler at 8:21. That's as close as the Royals would get as Wingate went on a 13-2 run to regain control of the game going up by 16, 56-40, with 4:03 left to play. The Royals would try to make a final push, but Wingate was able to maintain their lead with consistent shooting from the foul line in the final minutes of action.
Queens shot 40.4 percent from the floor this evening compared the Wingate's 39.6 shooting percentage. The Royals struggled from the foul line shooting 50 percent on 10-of-20 attempts. Both teams grabbed 36 rebounds.
The Royals return to Cuddy Arena to face Lenoir-Rhyne University tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
