Royals down Bobcats in the first round of playoffs

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte volleyball team hosted the Bobcats of Lees-McRae in first round of the Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball playoffs today. In front of a fired up crowd the Royals swept the Bobcats 3-0, and ensured that their season continued.
 
In the first set the Royals picked up a lead in the early moments behind the strong serving of Taylor Riley (Lynchburg, Va., E.C. Glass).  Leading 6-3 the Royals maintained the difference for a few points, but could not hold off the Bobcats from taking the lead 16-15. From there the Royals took the play to another level, and never looked back. The Royals outhit the Bobcats .333 to .147 in the set, and won by the score of 25-20.
 
In the second set the Royals once again found themselves in a tight match with the energized Bobcats. Exchanging points early in the match it was the high flying Royals behind kills by Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory)  Ashlyn Dibrell (Arlington, Texas, Lamar)  and Lindsey Everhart (Cincinnati, Ohio, McNicholas) that began to pull away. With a lead the Royals never looked back and took the second set 25-18.
 
Following the intermission both teams came out swinging in the third set. Once again both teams exchanged points early on, but it was Queens that eventually took the lead. With Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) leading the offense the Royals took a 13-11 lead and never looked back. With the game tied 24-20 it was Alexa Sparrell (Winter Park, Fla., Winter Park) who crashed home a devastating service ace to give the Royals the match.
 
Everhart led the Royals with 12 kills, and was joined in double digits with by Gibbs and Tori Hernandez (Gainesville, Fla., Gainesvillle) with 11. From her setter position Riley applied a steady hand to the Royals' offense, and finished the match with 41 assists. Defensively Sparrell picked up 11 digs, and Everhart and Gibbs dominated over the net with multiple blocks.
 
The Royals currently stand at 21-11 on the season and 13-2 in conference play. Queens hosts the winner of North Greenville and Coker Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
