Royals come up short against Bears

Box Score WINGATE, N.C. – Trailing by seven with less than a minute on the clock, the Royals made a late push to pull within one, 50-49, of the Bears at 16 seconds. Lenoir-Rhyne University would net three of four free-throws to hold Queens University of Charlotte's surge off, taking the 53-50 win in non-conference men's basketball action at Wingate University's Cuddy Arena.
 
The Royals begin their season at 0-2 after dropping both games in the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Tip-Off Classic, while the Bears begin theirs at 2-0.
 
Senior forward Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) sparked Queens' run with a jumper at 38 seconds bringing Queens to within one, 49-44. Following a free-throw by LR's Matt Kunz, Queens' Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) drained a three pointer making the score 50-47. Freshman point guard Joby Glymph (Lexington, S.C., Lexington) then stole the ball, dribbling the length of the court for a fast-break layup making it a one point game. With 16 seconds to play, the Royals were forced to take their chances and foul the Bears sending them to the line and stopping the clock. The Bears were able to seal their win at the free-throw line knocking down three of four.
 
Today's game was one where both teams struggled scoring; with Queens shooting 34 percent from the floor compared to LR's 32.6 shooting percentage. The first half saw four ties and four lead changes, and at the break the Bears led 25-22.
 
Queens trailed the entire second half with LR holding as large as a seven point lead on a few occasions.
 
Junior forward Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) led all on the floor with 19 points. He also grabbed six rebounds. Stabler finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while Blackburn chipped in eight points. The Royals edged the Bears in rebounds 34-33.
 
The Bears were led by Kunz who scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for a double-double. Jarvis Perry and Denzel Dillingham added nine points apiece.
 
Queens returns to action on November 17 in their home opener against Lees-McRae at 4 p.m.
