Royals down Cobras in conference play

The Royals won 60-50.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte remains one of just two teams undefeated in conference play after downing Coker College in men's basketball action. The 60-50 win improves the Royals' record to 6-0 in Conference Carolinas, and 11-5 overall. The Cobras drop to 1-5 in the league, and 7-8 on the season.

The Royals opened the game with a 13-4 run before Coker knocked down three baskets from behind the three-point arc to tie things up at 13-13. The Cobras would lead over the next nine minutes with Queens staying on their heels. Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) equalized the game at 24-24 with a three-ball before the Royals took a three point lead, 27-24, heading into the break.

Queens began the second with a 6-0 run eventually building an 11-point lead with 12:36 left the play. The Cobras tried to even things back up relying on their shooting, but the Royals didn't let them get closer than five points. Queens put together a 14-9 spurt in the final eight minutes to secure the win. The home team saw its largest lead of the game at the 3:28 mark after  Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) raced up the court ahead of the pack to flush home a dunk putting the Royals up 15 points.

The Cobras shot just 33.3 percent from the floor, while the Royals hit 46.9 percent of their shots. Coker held the advantage on the glass with 40 rebounds to the Royals 37 boards.

Stabler led the Royals with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also snatched down eight boards. Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) added 14 points, while Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside) scored nine. Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond )Sam Johnson (Leicester, N.C., Asheville Christian) and Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) each recorded six rebounds.

Charles West led the Cobras with 14 points on the night. Sharod Williams and Jonathan Gardner scored eight points apiece. Julian Nelson led Coker under the glass with seven rebounds.

The Royals will continue conference play on Saturday night at Belmont Abbey. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
