Queens victorious over North Greenville in OT

The Royals won 99-90.

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With the clock reading 13-seconds and North Greenville ahead three points, junior guard Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) hit the game-tying three-pointer to send this afternoon's game in extra minutes where the Royals were able to pick up their first overtime victory of the year defeating the Crusaders 99-90. Queens University of Charlotte remains undefeated in the league at 5-0 while extending their overall record to 10-5. North Greenville drops to 2-3 in the conference and 7-5 on the season.

In the overtime period the two teams traded baskets up to around the two-minute mark when the Royals ended the game with nine unanswered points to secure the victory. The two minute stretch featured a fast-break dunk from Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) followed by a turnaround fade-away jump shot on the baseline from Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield). Free-throws extended Queens' lead for the final score.

The Royals opened the game with a 13-4 run before North Greenville gained momentum and cut the Royals' lead to four with just under 13-minutes to play. The Crusaders eventually got to within one on a layup from Jason Wray with 6:52 on the clock. David Cheek (Graham, N.C., Graham) answered for Queens knocking down a three-ball, but the Crusaders stayed on the Royals' heels tying the game before going up by two, 30-28. Four unanswered points for the Royals gave them a 34-30 lead at the break.

15-minutes into the second, the Royals held an 11-point lead. Hot shooting from behind the arc on the Crusaders' end of the floor helped them creep back into the game. Jimmy Ellis knocked down a three-point bucket with 12:44 on the clock closing Queens' lead to one, 56-55. Queens then mustered a 19-11 run capped off with a shot drilled from deep by Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside). The Crusaders were relentless though coming back to tie the game and take the lead before Blackburn's three-pointer sent the game into overtime.

Stabler led the Royals this afternoon with 22 points, while Bailey finished with 18. Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) scored 14 points, while Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) and Blackburn added 12 and 11, respectively. Bailey and Stabler led the Royals with five rebounds apiece. Nichols dished out seven assists, while Preston Newlin (Graham, N.C., Graham) collected six assists.

The Crusaders were led by Paul Harrison who turned in the only double-double of the game with 23 points and 17 rebounds. He also collected six assists. Chris Dean scored 18 points, while Ellis finished with 17. Zack Shields added 14 points. Tim Franklin dished out seven assists.

The Royals will continue conference play on Wednesday against Coker College at 7:30 p.m. at the Grady Cole Center.
