Queens pushes five straight points for win

The Royals defeated the Tornados 3-2.

BREVARD, N.C. – The Royals recorded the final five points of the fifth set coming from behind for the 3-2 win in dramatic fashion over the hosting Tornados of Brevard College Boshamer Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Closing the match on Lindsey Everhart's service ace, the Royals won 25-18, 16-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-13.

Queens (7-4) was led by a trio of hitters as Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley ) led the Royals attack with 11 kills in the match on a dominating .455 hitting percentage. Brittney Barren (Ham Lake, Minn., Blaine) and Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary) both contributed 10 kills apiece while Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) had a team high 24 digs on the back line. Everhart, in addition to her game-clincher, recorded four service aces in the match and 18 digs, while Barren completed the double-double with ten digs of her own.

Lindsey Rogers led the way for Brevard (3-6) with 24 digs as the Tornados saw five players achieve double-figures in the defensive category as the team recorded 80 digs. Kortney Conner recorded the double-double on the day with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Ashlie Morrison recorded a team high 16 kills in the match. Bethany Stevenson added 34 set assists and 14 digs, while Sydney Yeomans (12) and Jamie Atkinson were also in double-digits.

The Royals took control late in the first set behind a trio of Brevard attack errors as Queens went up 23-17 on Taylor Riley's (Lynchburg, Va., E.C. Glass) serve. A kill by Kemp put the Royals within one point of the 1-0 lead, but Yeomans gave the serve back to the Tornados with a jumping kill from the back line. However, the rally was short-lived as Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) followed with a kill of her own to close out the set 25-18 in favor of the guests.

A block by Gibbs and Kemp in the second set put the score at 17-16 in the second set in favor of the Tornados, and Brevard used back-to-back kills by Conner to go up 19-16 as BC rode an 8-0 run on Atkinson's serve, capped by kills by Yeomans and Conner to knot the match up following the 25-16 set victory.

In the third set, Queens jumped ahead early, recording 10 of the first 11 points in the match and was able to stave off the comeback in going up 2-1 with the 25-16 set victory.

Queens again jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set, scoring the first four points, but the Tornados tied the set up on a pair of service aces by Yeomans as the score went back and forth before Brevard took control late in the match following a pair of kills by Morrison to give the Tornados the 23-20 advantage. Though Tori Hernandez (Gainesville, Fla., Gainesvillle) connected on a kill for the Royals to cut into the lead, Brevard was able to close out the set on back-to-back kills by Morrison to set the game into the deciding fifth set.

Behind a pair of kills by Jordei Osby, the Tornados held the advantage at the midway point of the set as the teams switched sides with BC up 8-6. However, the turning point of the set came on a kill by Everhart, cutting the lead back to 12-10 and following a kill by Morrison, Queens closed out the set with the final five points of the match to stun the crowd and end the game. Harvey led the way for the Royals notching three of the final four kills for Queens before Everhart served an ace putting the nail in the coffin.

The Royals will pick Conference Carolinas play back up at Mount Olive on Friday at 7 p.m.
