Tennis nabs pair of wins

After three weeks without a match, the Royals soundly defeat Barton

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- After a three-week hiatus, the Queens University of Charlotte men's and women's tennis teams nabbed a pair of wins over Conference Carolinas opponent Barton College at Ovens Athletics Center Friday afternoon. The women put away the Bulldogs by a score of 8-1 and the men pick up a 7-2 victory.
 
The Royals women's team improves to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in league play. Barton drops to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
 
On the men's side, Queens improves to10-2 overall and remains a perfect 6-0 against conference schools and Barton falls to 9-7 overall and 2-4 in league action.
 
For the day, Queens did not drop a doubles match. Both the men and women used the 3-0 start jumpstart singles play.
 
After an intense win in doubles, Elena Mileva (Sofia, Bulgaria, First Private English Language School) lost to Barton's freshman Mika Deane. Mileva won the first set 6-3, dropped the second 3-6, and fell in marathon tie-breaker 13-11. The victory for Deane is her eight consecutive wins in singles play. The loss is just Mileva's third all season, with one coming from nationally ranked No. 35 Jitka Gavdunova of No. 13 Francis Marion.
 
Christiaan Lee-Daigle (Tecumseh, Ontario, L'Essor Secondary School) and Raahil Dhruva (London, England, Parmiter's), who just earned a No. 4 ranking in region doubles play, ended an eight-match win streak for Barton's Cesar Grobel and Gabriel Araujo. The loss is just the second for the Bulldogs' duo in Conference Carolinas action. The win for the Royals keeps them undefeated in doubles play.
 
In singles play, the top flight proved to be an exciting one. The two players are some of the best in the region with Lee-Daigle ranked No. 6 in singles play and Grobel, who was preseason nationally No. 32, is No. 19 in region play. Lee-Daigle went to work and won 6-4, 6-1.
 
Queens gave up matches at the second and third flights. Araujo defeated David Hannon (Gastonia, N.C., Episcopal Alexandria) and P.A. Desilets took Joshua Bloch (Johannesburg, South Africa, King David)

The Royals travel to Banner Elk, N.C. to play Lees-McRae on April 6.
