Francis Marion spoils spring opener for Queens tennis

FLORENCE, S.C. – The No. 44 Queens women's tennis team's 21-game regular season winning streak came to an end Sunday afternoon, as they fell 6-3 at No. 13 Francis Marion.

After failing to drop a point in the fall session, the Royals' (4-1) dream of back-to-back perfect regular seasons came to an early end. The Patriots (1-0), however, took the court for the first time since falling to eventual three-peat NCAA DII champion Armstrong Atlantic State in the finals of the Southeast Regional Tournament.

No. 5 Mona Blauen and Jitka Gavdunova got the best of Elena Mileva (Sofia, Bulgaria, First Private English Language School) and Christina Rustscheff (Toronto, Canada, Bayview Glen), taking three points from the pair on the afternoon. Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) and Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson), ranked No. 10 in the Southeast, defeated Caitlin Siney and Kathryn Vernon 8-3.

In the men's match, the No. 39 Royals led the 14th-ranked Patriots 4-1 after the first two singles matches were completed. But, No. 41 Christiaan Lee-Daigle (Tecumseh, Ontario, L'Essor Secondary School) was outlasted by No. 3 Oshada Wijemanne, falling 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in the first flight of the Royals' 5-4 loss. Joshua Bloch (Johannesburg, South Africa, King David) and David Hannon (Gastonia, N.C., Episcopal Alexandria) paired to combine for three of the Royals' four points.
