LAURINBURG, N.C. – Queens men's basketball's 13-game win streak came to an end Saturday afternoon, as the Royals fell
68-80 to St. Andrews Presbyterian (10-10, 6-6 Conference Carolinas).
The loss at Harris Court, their first of the season against a conference opponent, leaves Queens (14-5, 10-1) a half game ahead of Limestone for the lead in the conference standings.
Despite struggled to find his mark,
Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C., Ashbrook) was able to tally a game-high 20 points on six-of-19 shooting.
With the senior guard hitting just one of his seven first-half attempts, the Royals – led by
Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) and
Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) who combined to connect on 10 of 15 shots for 22 points – rallied to shoot 44.4 percent and go into the break tied at 36.
Staying within six points throughout the second half, the Royals, trailing 59-62, tied the game for the ninth time on a Hopkins three-pointer with five minutes remaining.
The Royals couldn't maintain that accuracy down the stretch, going just one-for-seven in the final two minutes to shoot 30.8 percent in the in the second half.
The Knights connected on 30 field goals to shoot 47.6 percent on the game – a pair of season highs against the
nationally-ranked Royals defense.
The Royals look to start a new streak Monday night, when they welcome Lees-McRae (5-13, 1-9) to Ovens Athletic Center for a 7:30 tip.
