Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team faced Lynn University this evening falling to the Fighting Knights in overtime by a score of 81-79. The Royals' record is now at 5-5, while the Fighting Knights improve to 7-5.
Queens fought back in the second half chipping away at Lynn's 11 point lead. With 12:18 on the clock,
Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) scored a lay-up to give the Royals a 57-56 lead.
Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt) was credited the assist on the play after collecting a steal on the defensive end of the floor. Queens would lead by as much as four before the Fighting Knights came back reclaiming the lead on a jumper by Bo Jukic. With 2:36 on the clock, Bailey delivered a dunk after
Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside) found him ahead of the pack on a fast-break to give Queens a 70-69 lead. On Lynn's possession, Nichols collected a huge rebound after a shot and was fouled. He knocked down both free-throws putting Queens ahead by three, 72-69. However, Lynn had an answer in Josh Garcia who scored a three-pointer to tie the game at 72-72 forcing overtime.
The Royals led 79-77 in overtime with 1:25 to play after
Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) drained a shot from three-point land. On the next play, a lay-up from Lynn's Garcia tied the game back up. With 12-seconds left, Demario Fountain of the Fighting Knights was fouled and sent to the line where he knocked down the final two points of the game. The Royals had a chance to tie the game with a final possession as the clock read 1.6-seconds but came up short.
Queens outscored Lynn 48-26 in the paint tonight. They also collected 20 points off of Lynn's 13 turnovers. The Fighting Knights scored 11 three-pointers, nine coming in the first half, this evening.
After the first half of play, the Fighting Knights headed into the locker room with a 46-37 lead due in large part to the nine three-pointers they scored. Queens stayed aggressive driving to the basket and getting to the foul line for 10 points on 13 attempts (76.9%).
David Mason (Decatur, Ga., Chamblee) tied the game at 10-10 with a tip-in at 14:50. His shot was followed by one from Bailey that gave the Royals their first lead of the game. A three-pointer from Lynn's Slobodan Miljanic put the lead back in the hands of the Fighting Knights and they held on to it for the remainder of the half.
Bailey led all players on the floor tonight with a season-high 27 points. He also collected five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Nichols had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Eads led all with nine assists. He also scored six points and had four rebounds.
The Fighting Knights were led by Jeremy Lampkin who finished with 21 points. Miljanic and Garcia scored 14 and 11 points, respectively. Michel Vidal had a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Royals will break for the holidays before returning to the court to face Barton College on January 3. The game is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Grady Cole Center.
