Queens opens Courtyard by Marriott Classic with win over Barry

The Royals defeated the Buccaneers 69-64.

Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Royals scored seven points from the free-throw line in the final 53-seconds of this evening's game clinching the 69-64 victory over Barry University in the Courtyard by Marriott Classic hosted by Lynn University. Queens University of Charlotte now sits at 5-4 on the season, while the Buccaneers drop to 4-7.

The Royals won the tip and put the first points on the board on a jumper from Brandon Nichols (Fayetteville, N.C., Jack Britt). A few turnovers followed for Queens allowing Barry to build an 8-4 lead before Bailey closed the gap to two with two shots from the charity stripe. Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) brought the Royals to within one on a shot he drilled from deep behind the three-point line. On the next trip down the court, Nichols found Preston Newlin (Graham, N.C., Graham) sneaking along the baseline for a jumper that gave Queens a 15-14 lead with 10:15 to play. Queens led the rest of the half turning up the defensive pressure forcing mishaps in the Buccaneers' offense. With just under a minute to play, Nichols gave Queens a 14 point lead with a pull-up jumper off the dribble.

Queens led 34-22 going into the break on 50-percent shooting. Barry shot 35.7-percent from the floor. The Royals were able to convert the Buccaneers' 10 turnovers into 12 points.

In the second half the Royals kept right around a 10 point gap between themselves and the Buccaneers up until the 11-minute mark. Justin McCoy of Barry knocked down two three-pointers within a few minutes bringing the Buccaneers to within three of Queens, 48-45. Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield)responded with a lay-up to put Queens back up by five, but Barry would score the next two buckets bringing them to within one of Queens with 7:14 on the clock. From that point, the two teams traded baskets with the Royals still keeping control of the lead until McCoy gave the Buccaneers a one point lead, 60-59, with 1:37 to play after knocking down two from the free-throw line.

On the next play, Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside) found Blackburn wide open in the corner on an inbound play where he knocked down his third three-pointer of the night returning the lead to the Royals, 62-60. McCoy would tie the game back up on a lay-up, but the Royals had time on their side as fouls sent them to the line where they stepped up big knocking down seven of their 10 attempts in the final seconds of the game.

Bailey led the Royals this evening with 16 points, while Nichols and Stabler chipped in 12 points apiece. Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) led the Royals under the glass collecting eight rebounds to go along with his eight points. Blackburn finished with nine points and Eads added eight points and four assists. Nichols dished out three assists and collected four steals.

McCoy led the Buccaneers with 17 points, while Jermaine Edwards recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Queens will return to the court tomorrow to face the tournament host, Lynn University, at 7 p.m.
