Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) scored a layup and three free-throws in the final 17-seconds of tonight's game giving the Royals a five point lead that they held on to until the horn sounded. Queens University of Charlotte defeated Johnson C. Smith University 75-70 improving to 4-2 on the season. The Golden Bulls fall to 2-3 on the year.
Bailey led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor. He also collected six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) scored 14 points and grabbed seven boards, while
Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) knocked down 10 points and totaled four rebounds.
Trevin Parks led the Golden Bulls with 20 points, while Robert Williams added 13. James Otey and Delonta Boyd notched 10 points apiece. Antwan Wilkerson led all with nine rebounds.
The game opened with six lead changes before the Golden Bulls went ahead, 10-8, on a three-pointer by Otey at the 15:21 mark. Johnson C. Smith kept the lead throughout the first going up by as much as 10. With less than a minute to play,
Sam Johnson (Leicester, N.C., Asheville Christian) delivered a dunk which was soon followed by a bucket from behind the arc by
David Cheek (Graham, N.C., Graham) narrowing the Golden Bulls' lead to five at the break.
In the second, the Golden Bulls' Parks put the visitors up seven with a pull up jumper just inside the three-point arc. Queens would cut the lead to three, 44-41, after a steal and layup by
Sean Eads (Greenville, S.C., Eastside), but the Golden Bulls responded stretching their lead back out to as much as seven again with 14:35 on the clock.
The Royals began their push with 8:49 to go when Stabler scored an acrobatic layup to tie the game at 59-59. Evans followed with another Queens bucket giving the Royals their first lead of the game since the 17:19 mark in the first, 61-59. A turnover by the Golden Bulls led to another layup from Bailey giving Queens a four point lead, 63-59, with six minutes to play. Johnson C. Smith wouldn't go down easy though as they scored the next five points to take a 64-63 lead.
The game would go back and forth over the next few minutes before
Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) drilled a three from deep that ignited the Royals crowd. Parks tried to keep the Golden Bulls alive tying the game at 70-70 with 45-seconds to play, but Bailey was on a mission as he drove to the basket collecting three points the old-fashioned way. He then followed with two free-throws sealing the deal after being fouled.
The Royals will travel to face Winston-Salem State University this Saturday for their next game. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
