Queens victorious over Wingate

The Royals defeated the Bulldogs 63-59.

Box Score GAFFNEY, S.C. – Queens University of Charlotte improved to 2-0 today after handing Wingate University its second loss of the year in the Conference Carolinas/SAC Challenge hosted by Limestone College. The Royals defeated the Bulldogs 63-59.

Leading the Royals today was junior forward Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) who finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) was Queens' next leading scorer with 12 points and four steals. Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) knocked down three shots from behind the three-point line for nine points, while Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C., Battery Creek) completed the game with seven points and five boards.

Odell Turner of the Bulldogs recorded the game's only double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Chase Smith and Eddie Lewis also contributed scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively. Lewis also notched seven rebounds.

Queens outscored the Bulldogs in the paint 28-16 tonight despite getting out-rebounded 42-27. The Royals also controlled the ball better than their opponent committing only 12 turnovers compared to Wingate's 21. Queens capitalized on Wingate's poor ball handling converting the turnovers into 19 points.

The game was tight in the first half with the score sitting at 16-16 at 8:32. Odell Turner scored three-points the old fashioned way to put the Bulldogs up, but Queens' Joshua Twitty (Rutherfordton, N.C., Polk County) drilled a three to give the lead back to the Royals, 21-19. Turner responded with a three of his own to put Wingate back up by one, 22-21. A bucket from Bailey would put the Royals up once more before Wingate went ahead for good heading into the locker room with a 28-25 lead.

The Bulldogs went up by as much as four early in the second period before Stabler delivered a dunk putting Queens ahead for the remainder of play. The Royals' largest lead in the second half was eight points on a few occasions. The first time came when Blackburn sunk a three at 12:31 putting Queens up 42-34. A little over three minutes later the Royals went up by eight again when Brandon Nichols scored a lay-up on a fast-break sparked by a Bailey steal.

Wingate cut Queens' lead down to one with an and-one play at 5:02, 53-52. Bailey would respond with a three-pointer to put the Royals back up by four. At that point, the clock was on Queens' side as the Bulldogs were forced the put the Royals on the free-throw line. Queens stayed poised under the pressure ending the game making 5-6 free-throws to clinch the win.

The Royals shot 41.5-percent from the floor tonight, while Wingate turned in a 42.2 shooting percentage.

Queens returns to the court next weekend on Friday, November 18th against Georgia College and State University in the Final Fire Classic hosted by the Royals. The game is slated to begin at 8 p.m.
