Royals edged by Crusaders in women’s soccer

The Royals were defeated 1-0

BELMONT, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte was edged 1-0 this afternoon in women's soccer action with Belmont Abbey College at Alumni Field. Queens drops to 5-8-1 overall and 5-3-1 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abby's record improves to 8-7 overall and 7-2 in Conference Carolinas.

The Abbey held off the Royals after a red card just 18 minutes in forced them to play a man down. Ananda Gebreyesus scored the only goal of the match when she finished off of a rebounded Rebecca Mateo shot giving the Crusaders a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute that would prove to be the game winner.

Belmont Abbey held an 8-6 advantage in shots, but the Royals took three corner kicks to just one for the Crusaders. Lauren Vawter (Mooresville, N.C., Lake Norman ) and Samantha Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ) led the Royals in shots with two each. Megan Hirschy tallied one save in the net.

The Royals will take to the field on Tuesday at 5 pm to face No. 9 Lenoir Rhyne University.
