Stuetzel debuts in the 2k steeplechase: On pace for a national qualifying mark

Royals compete locally at JCSU

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Queens Royals competed in their hometown of Charlotte, N.C. this weekend at the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational. A full track and field squad represented Queens well with Simon Stuetzel (Meinborn, Germany) starting off with the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 5:59.14. The distance squad also consisted of three men in the 800-meters and six men in the 1,500-meters.
 
Nelson Mwangi (Kenya, Nairobi School), NCAA Indoor 800-meter runner-up, led the Royals in a second place finish in the 800-meters running a 1:52.15, followed by teammates Christopher Watson (Tampa, Fla., Wharton), who debuted in the event at 2:02.25, and senior Matt Rowell (Show Low, Ariz., Blue Ridge) at 2:04.69.
 
In the 1,500-meter run, National Champion Michael Crouch (Yucca Valley, Calif., Yucca Valley) placed second with a time of 3:59.98, followed closely by teammates Alexander Schilling (Dresden, Germany, Sportgymnasium Dresden) (4:00.55) and Futsum Mebrahtu (Pheonix, Ariz., North) (4:03.91). Rounding out the field were teammates Benny Perez (Modesto, Ca., Ceres) (4:17.40), Tim Cody (4:27.00), and Stefan Liotchev (Durham, N.C., Riverside) (4:52.21).
 
Clayton Mages (Waxhaw, N.C., Marvin Ridge) led the shot put field with a 14th overall place and a mark of 10.91 meters. Mages, who ranks among the top six in both the shot and the discus in the conference, posted a mark of 32.18 meters to place him 11th overall. Teammates Ely Friedman (Paris, Ky., Bourbon County) and Brian Yates (Newton, N.C., Fred T. Ford) also competed in the shot put.
 
Nathan Fields (Charlotte, N.C., Weddington) placed sixth in the javelin with a competitive mark of 36.82 meters.
 
Come support the men's track and field team in their next competition at the Conference Carolinas Championship next weekend, April 16th and 17th at Lees McRae University in Banner Elk, N.C.
