Men’s basketball upsets Barton

After tying the game at 88, Royals win in OT

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C., Ashbrook) scored 12 points in the last 4:55 of regulation to help Queens University of Charlotte tie Barton College at 88-88 and force overtime play. Queens outscored Barton 10-8 in OT to upset the second-placed Bulldogs 101-99 in Wilson, N.C.

The Queens University of Charlotte men's basketball team extended its winning streak to three while Barton is on a four game slide. The win improves the Royals to 9-11 overall and 6-7 in league play while Barton drops to 11-7 and 7-4 in Conference Carolinas action. The loss drops Barton to third place in the conference while Queens is now tied for seventh.

The game was exciting from the start with neither team taking more than a five point lead in the first half and it wasn't until the last six minutes of the second half when Barton managed to get nine points up on Queens. The lead was short lived and lasted just one possession.

Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond) hit his only three of the night to bring Queens within six and converted on one of two free throws putting the Royals within five with 5:03 to play. Hopkins continued with the offensive attack and proved to be a key player in the last five minutes of regulation and the overtime period.

Hopkins' 12 points in the last 4:55 included the game-tying layup with three ticks left on the clock. In OT Hopkins hit six of six free throws and put in a layup to keep Queens on top.

For the night Hopkins led all scorers with 28 points, his best this season. This is Hopkins fourth consecutive game leading Royals scorers. Defensively Hopkins blocked three shots.

Bailey added 24 points for Queens. David Cheek (Graham, N.C., Graham) played strong defense blocking four shots and creating two steals.

Barton's Eddie Kershaw scored 20 points and Jaren Hailey had 18.
