CHARLOTTE, N.C.- A last second effort by Antonio Stabler (Garner, N.C., Wakefield) to give Queens a tie ball game and force overtime wouldn't fall and the visiting Anderson Trojans came away with the Conference Carolinas victory by a score of 75-73.
The Royals (11-12/8-8 CC) saw an early seven point lead in the half slide away and swing the other way. The defense used two Trojan (17-6/11-6 CC) turnovers and pulled down two defensive rebounds to slow the Trojans and put them within three. Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) hit a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 67 with 4:44 left to play. The bucket was his only one of the night and couldn't have come at a better time.
The game had been going more the Anderson way and Blackburn's three helped to keep Queens in it, along with the Royals home crowd.
Anderson was able to edge the Royals by four points after sinking free throws and hitting a three of their own after Blackburn's bucket. Queens used a Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) putback and an Stabler field goal to tied the game again, this time with 59 seconds to play. Seventeen seconds later a field goal by Anderson's Brandon Young would eventually win the game.
Both teams were 44.1% from the floor taking and making the exact same number of field goals, 26/59. The Royals shooters held the advantage at the free throw line converting for 66.7% while Anderson was 62.5%.
Bailey led Queens with 18 points and Stabler scored 16. Anderson's Young led all scorers with 19. Tony Anderson and Stephen Cobb each had 17.
Queens hosts Coker College on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 7:30pm at the Grady Cole Center. Just prior to the start of the game Queens will introduce its first-ever Hall of Fame class.
