CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Royals were held scoreless tonight in a women's soccer game between Queens University of Charlotte and Lees-McRae College. With the loss the Royals (5-2 5-6) are now tied in second place with the Bobcats (5-2 9-3) in Conference Carolinas action.
Queens opened the second half looking to strike with two shots in the first five minutes of the half. Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) fired first getting her shot blocked by Bobcat's keeper Brittany Bolton. The Royals won a corner kick on the play which was taken by Sami Striano (Clearwater, Fla., Countryside ). Kathryn Sylvester got a shot off after the corner which was also saved by Bolton.
The Royals had their final chance at evening the score in the 76th minute when Wright had a one timer land in the hands of Bobcats' keeper Bolton again.
Emily Jones of Lees-McRae scored the lone goal of the game in the 29th minute. Kaitlyn Kerrigan delivered a corner kick to MaryBeth Sullivan who found Jones in the box for the finish.
Queens was outshot 14-6 by Lees-McRae in the match. Megan Hirschy (Fort Wayne, Ind., Shattuck-St.Mary's School) finished the game with three saves while the Bobcats' Bolton tallied four.
The Royals are back in action on Tuesday when they play host to Armstrong Atlantic for a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
