CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens volleyball got back on track Wednesday night at Ovens Athletic Center, sweeping their South Atlantic Conference opponent Brevard College (2-13) by the scores of 25-21; 25-19 ; 25-13 to improve to 12-6 in 2010. In just 18 matches played this season, the Royals are currently tied with their most overall wins since the 2004 season.
Getting better as the night moved along, head coach Angela McGuire was enthusiastic about her team's ability to move forward in preparation for their next conference match.
“This was a great midweek win for us as we head into a conference match against Coker on Saturday,” said McGuire.
“We were able to come out a lot looser tonight after dropping a tough match to Belmont less than 24 hours earlier. We stayed in system, both offensively and defensively, and a lot of different lineups were used.”
Alexa Sparrell (Winter Park, Fla., Winter Park) continued to anchor the Royals' offense, putting down 11 of her 17 attempts to hit a match-high .529 and two service aces.
Avery Moore (Arlington, Texas, Lamar) received a majority of playing time at setter for the Royals and made it count – chipping in her third consecutive double-double with 21 assists and 11 digs.
Rounding out the offense
were Keri Kemp (Lake Mary, Fla., Lake Mary),
Brittany Harvey (Matthews, N.C., Sun Valley ), and
Anna Gibbs (Hickory, N.C., Hickory) who each added four-plus kills.
At libero,
Jocelyn Kellinger (Roanoke, Va., Cave Spring) led a stingy Royals defense that held the Tornados without a single ace, passing a perfect 54-54
The Royals will savor the win for a few days before getting back into conference play when they travel to Hartsville, S.C. for a 2:00 p.m. match against Coker College (1-8 CC, 1-12).
