Tennis dominates Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens tennis provided a pair of victories for their loyal fans in attendance at Ovens Athletics Center Wednesday afternoon, as the men's and women's teams both swept Johnson C. Smith University 9-0 for the second consecutive year.

Winning their second match of the young season, the men's team showcased their depth – dominating in the lower flights. In flights 4-6, Raahil Dhruva (London, England, Parmiter's), Christopher Kennedy (Colorado Springs, Co., TCA), and Bryce Boothby (Sudbury, Mass., Pendleton) each finished 6-0, 6-0 to shutout the Golden Bulls.

The top flights cruised as well. Christiaan Lee-Daigle (Tecumseh, Ontario, L'Essor Secondary School) topped Robert Butts 6-2, 6-2, while Joshua Bloch (Johannesburg, South Africa, King David) and David Hannon (Gastonia, N.C.) held down the two and three flights with a pair of 6-1, 6-0 victories.

Preceding singles competition, the men's team surrendered just one of 25 games played in doubles competition. With Bloch and Hannon, first flight, and Lee-Daigle and Dhruvia ,second flight, taking care of business, Bryant Fuller (Tampa, Fla., Wharton) and Gustavo Munhoz (Santos, Brazil, COC Universitario) won 8-0 in their only action of the day.

Building on their 2-0 start, the women's team continued to destroy their competition.

After her opponent's injury forced the match to end early on Tuesday, Christina Rustscheff (Toronto, Canada, Bayview Glen) showed off her fresh legs with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win in the first flight.

Elena Mileva (Sofia, Bulgaria, First Private English Language School) and Morgan Roberts (Fort Pierce, Fla., Treasure Coast) rounded out the top flights with a pair of easy wins, finishing 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively.

The women's team also displayed their depth, as their lower seeds, composed of Kaitlyn Blakey (Keller, Texas, Keller), Christine Garry (Greenwood, Ind., Brebeuf Jesuit Prep), and Gillian Mclinden (Marrietta,Georgia, Marietta) gave up just one game in their matches.

Erin Williams (Arden, N.C., T.C. Roberson) and Amanda Poole (Douglasville, Ga., South Paulding) got involved during the doubles stanza of the match. Williams paired with Roberts to take the first flight, 8-1, while Poole and Blakey picked up an 8-0 win in the second flight. Garry and McLinden teamed up in the third flight to win 8-1, and take a combined 32 of their 34 games.

Both teams wrap up their fall schedule this Sunday when they travel to Greensboro College for an 11:00 a.m. match.
