CHARLOTTE, N.C.- A flurry of six three-pointers in the last five and a half minutes to cut a12 point Barton College (7-3/3-0 CC) lead down to two with 13 seconds left looked like it would be enough to lift Queens (4-5/1-2 CC) over the Bulldogs. A bucket by Andre Lockhart (St. James, Barbados, Coleridge and Pany)brought Queens within one, but the Royals would not come away with the win. Barton left Ovens Athletics Center with the league victory by a score of 99-97.
Sophomore Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) put up 35 points for Queens by knocking down four threes, thee of which came in the last 5:32 of the game.
The Royals led for most of the first half, turning the lead over in the last three and a half minutes. After Queens came within one, Barton used a pair of free throws and a field goal to take a six point lead, 41-35, into the locker room.
The Bulldogs carried the momentum into the second half and eventually built a 13 point edge over Queens midway through. The Royals slowly chipped away at the 13 points and then the long range shooters came alive.
Nate Blackburn (Burlington, N.C., Graham) hit his second three pointer of the night to bring Queens within seven and 30 seconds later Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C., Ashbrook) sank his second of the night. Barton answered opening the lead back up to 12 with 6:26 to go, but again the three-point shooting kept Queens in it.
The Royals scored 39 points from behind the arc, 27 in the second half alone. Overall, Queens hit 12-29 threes and was 46.4% from the floor. In addition to Bailey's 35, Hopkins contributed 18 and Devon Seaford (Charlotte, N.C., Hope Christian Academy) added 14.
Barton was led by Jaren Haley with 22 points. Eddie Kershaw scored 16, Klevin Pollard added 14 and Greg Mammel chipped in 13.
Both teams play again on Saturday with Queens traveling to Coker and Barton to Lees-McRae.
