Men’s basketball stumbles in second half

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens men's basketball team couldn't keep pace with the visiting Pfeiffer Falcons on Saturday night, as they fell to their conference foe 106-120.

Daniel Bailey (Irmo, S.C., Hammond ) added another double-double to his resume with a game-high 32-point, 12-rebound night. Reggie Hopkins (Gastonia, N.C., Ashbrook)chipped in with 25 points and four rebounds, hitting five-of-eight from behind the arc. 

The Falcons relied on a balanced attack on the offensive end with four players scoring 18 or more points. Jeff Pettiway stole the show shooting 13-13 from the field including five-for-five in 3-point field goals. His only miss on the night came on the backend of a pair from the charity stripe with 8:54 remaining in the first half.

The first half included 17 lead changes with the Falcons leading at the break 57-55. With both teams hitting more than 52% of their shots, the difference in the game through twenty minutes was Pfeiffer's ability to score off the bench – leading the Royals 44-25.

In the second half, Queens stayed within five points until a Pfeiffer 8-0 run with 12 minutes remaining gave the Falcons a 10-point cushion they would build on for the remainder of the game.

Pfeiffer out rebounded the Royals 32-31 while each team gave up 15 turnovers. The Royals played a physical game committing 26 fouls, allowing the Falcons to convert 28 of their 38 free throw attempts.

With 1:12 remaining in the game, Hopkins hit a 3-point field goal to set his career tally over 1,000 points. He is currently 10th on Queens' all-time scoring list.

The Royals return to action Monday afternoon at Mount Olive.
