Royals fall to conference rival Crusaders

The Royals lost 1-0.

BELMONT, N.C. (September 21, 2009) – Belmont Abbey College sophomore midfielder Nicole Voets scored the only goal of the match on a deflected free kick in the 85th minute as the Crusaders women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over Queens University of Charlotte this afternoon at Alumni Field. The Abbey, unbeaten in 42 of its last 43 matches against conference opponents, moves to 4-2-0 overall and remains undefeated in Conference play at 3-0, while the Royals fall to 2-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in Conference Carolinas.

Belmont Abbey set up its goal on a counter attack. Erika Trivisonno ran down a long pass and got behind the Royals defense. Queens goalkeeper Kristen Kornacki (Glen Allen, Va., Deep Run ) charged in to challenge, but she tripped Trivisonno to the ground and was assessed an immediate red card. Voets set up the free kick about 20 yards away and fired a low blast that was deflected in past backup keeper Michelle Landry (Atlanta, Ga., Druid Hills ) for the only goal of the match.

The Crusaders outshot Queens 8-6 and held a dominating 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Kornacki and counterpart Kelsey Lovell both made three saves. Katherine Johnson (Chapel Hill, N.C., Northwood ) led the Royals in shots with two.
